Unraveling Hidden Treasures: The Bible
Not too long ago, reading the bible seemed like a chore or a task that I didn’t really enjoy doing. I didn’t enjoy it because I couldn’t understand it. It seemed like everything was written in some foreign language that I didn’t understand. However, I still had the yearning to read and understand it. One of my constant prayers was for the Lord to help me with reading and studying the scriptures. Thankfully, the Lord answered my prayer. Now the bible has come alive to me. I actually look forward to studying it daily because there’s always something new to learn. I approach reading and studying the bible with an expectant heart. I expect to hear the Lord speak to me. I expect to gain new insight and fresh revelation. I expect to gain new knowledge and put to practice everything I've learnt.
“The bible contains promises, prophecies, and principles so when you study it look for those things”
Some characteristics of the word of God
Reading and studying the bible to me is like going on a treasure hunt because it contains so much "good stuff" that always blesses me. I'm eager to know what the Word of God is saying to me, about me and about situations that I might be going through. And I say “is saying” in the present tense because:
- “The Word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12).
- The word of God is “God-breathed and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right” (2 Timothy 3:16 NLT).
- The word of God is “like fire and a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces” (Jeremiah 23:29).
- The word of God is “does not return to Him void” (Isaiah 55:11).
- The word of God is a treasure to those who find it! It is sweet to the soul, even sweeter than honey (Psalm 119:103).
The bible...oh what a precious treasure it is. It contains so much of God’s Wisdom. It has a solution to every problem. It convicts us yet comforts us. It reveals to us the heart of God. It contains hidden treasures that are only found and revealed in Jesus Christ and we have been invited to search them out. Like it says in Proverbs 25:2
"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings (people) to search out the matter."So it is our responsibility to search out these hidden treasures.
I want to challenge you to dive into the bible today and start finding out what God is saying about you and whatever situation you may be currently facing. But before you start, ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see what He wants you to see, your ears to hear what He wants you to hear, and your heart to receive what He is speaking to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding of the scriptures and revelations of what it means to you. Never read the bible without first praying and asking the Holy Spirit to give you understanding of whatever scripture you are about to read.
Remember, keep your hope in God for He loves you and has promised to never leave you nor forsake you!
