How Do I Hear God For Myself?

Blog Single

God why don’t You speak to me? Why can’t I hear You like everyone else? What have I done that is preventing me from hearing from You? Is there something wrong with me?

As I started my new spiritual journey with the Lord, those were some of the questions I battled and asked time after time. Lord, I asked, how can I hear you for myself? I asked Him how come I can’t hear from Him like He speaks to other people. Often, I would hear people, pastors, ministers, etc. say “the Lord told me” or “the Lord said to me”, or “I heard the Lord say”, or “the Holy Spirit told me”. Why God don’t you talk to me in this way? Am I doing something wrong? Lord but Your Word says Your sheep hear and listen Your voice, does that mean that I’m not one of Your sheep? Have you ever asked those questions? I have an answer for you.

One afternoon, as I sat in front of the computer listening to a message on YouTube by the late Dr. Myles Munroe, and making a wig for myself, the Lord answered questions through him. He said:

“when people say God told me, or the Lord spoke to me last week and said… and you start wondering how come God doesn’t speak to me like that, or you start thinking these are spiritual people”, he said, “all they mean is that they got an idea that wouldn’t go away.”
I mean wow! I immediately dropped the mannequin head I was holding with a needle in my hand and hair on the other hand, stood up from my chair, burst into praise. Wow! Talk about questions answered. God knows how to send us answers in simple languages or in a way that is simple and straight to the point. He knew that I needed the answer in its simplest form that I would understand and not doubt.

The bible says:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27 NKJV).

So you ask,how do I hear God speak to me?

Some of us do not hear God speak to us because we are expecting to hear a loud audible voice speak to us but God does not always speak to us with an audible voice.

  1. The number one way God speaks to us is through His written Word in the Bible. When you read the bible and it feels like some scriptures jump out at you; when you feel like what you just read speaks directly to your situation, yup, that’s God speaking to you. The only catch is that you would actually need to open that bible and read it. And when you read the bible, do not read it like any other book. Take time to study and meditate on it

  2. Well, you know that knowing you get deep inside of you; for example when someone asks you how do you know? And you respond, well I just know, I feel it deep down on the inside of me…well that knowing is God speaking to you through the His Spirit to your own spirit. His Spirit is bearing witness with your own spirit. However, you have to be in the right position with God and have a relationship with Him. That’s the only way you can rely on God speaking to you through your own spirit. However, you must first be in right standing with God by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior

  3. God also speaks to us through other people, and this can be people we don’t know. Someone may say something that resonates with your spirit or confirms something you were thinking about. They may share a word of knowledge with you, meaning they say something to you that they would not have normally known unless it was revealed to them by the Holy Spirit. God can even speak to you through your little children

  4. God also speaks to us through dreams and visions. We have to realize that not all dreams are meaningless. There are several people in the bible God spoke to through their dreams, and He is still doing the same to date. The key is to ask God for interpretation of those dreams and understanding of the visions

  5. God also speaks to us through our environments and everyday things that we come across.

There are several other ways God can speak to us but those are just some of the ways I have personally experienced. God speaks to us through sights, sounds, thoughts, impressions, and scriptures. There is no limit to the different ways He communicates with us. The key to hearing Him speak to you is to be open-minded; that is to be attentive to His messages in whatever form they come, says Sarah Young, author of the daily devotional book Jesus Calling. If you would open your heart and be willing to hear God speak through anyone or anything, you will begin to hear God for yourself. Psalm 85:8 in the Amplified Classic version says:

“I will listen [with expectancy] to what God the Lord will say, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints (those who are in right standing with Him)—but let them not turn again to [self-confident] folly.”
Don’t try to complicate it by over analyzing it, because truth be told, our human minds cannot comprehend it. We just need to believe that it is God speaking to you. When we start trying to use our own human intellect to understand how that is possible, then you will never hear from God. Even the bible says that,
the carnal (human) mind cannot understand the things of the Spirit (I Corinthians 2:14).

Listen, God may be speaking to you right now!

Remember, keep your hope in God for He loves you and has promised to never leave you nor forsake you!
