Giving God Praise
In this month of November which is the month of Thanksgiving in the United States, I have been meditating a lot on who God is to me and all the good things He has done for me and my family. I have actually been meditating on His goodness only in this month but in this season of my life.
Let me ask you, who is God to You? (You can pause right here and think about it, especially if you haven’t really thought about it lately). Who is Jesus Christ to You? Question number two, what attributes of God have you experienced or encountered? Have you experienced Him as your Healer? Or Provider? Or Comforter? What Characteristic of God have you experienced in your life? Answering these last two questions will help you answer the question, who is God to you? When you think of who God is to you, then you will be able and willing to give Him praise at all times and in every situation, and not only for what He has done for you, but for who He is to you.
I love Psalm 103 in the New Living Translation (NLT) version. I love it because it recounts and reminds us of some of the things God has done for us and why we are to praise Him. This a psalm written by David, and as I see it, a charge to each and every one of us. In verse 1-2, David says,
“Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise His holy Name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things He does for me.”
When last did you praise God with all your heart? When last did you praise Him with all you are? When last did you praise Him for all the good things He does for you? Or are you only concerned with what He hasn’t yet done?
Why Should I Give Praise to God?
In case you aren’t still convinced as to why you and I should give praise to God at all times, here are some reasons as outlined by David in Psalm 103.
- He forgives all our sins
- He heals all our diseases
- He redeems us from death
- He crowns us with love and tender mercies
- He fills our lives with good things
- He renews our youth like the eagle’s
- He gives us righteousness
- He gives us justice when we are treated unfairly
- He reveals His character to us
- He is compassionate and merciful
- He is slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love
- He does not constantly accuse us nor remain angry forever
- He does not punish us for all our sins
- He does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve
- His unfailing love towards those who fear (reverentially) Him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth
- He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west
- He is tender and compassionate to us His children
- His salvation extends to our children’s children
And all these are just to name a few. Give God praise because He not only deserves it, but He also created you and I for that purpose; also learn to make thanksgiving, a daily practice in your life.
Besides all God has done for us, we should also give Him praise for who He is.
Praising God for Who He is
There is a song that I love so much, part of the lyrics goes like this:
“I will lift up my voice, I will joyfully sing, Not for what You have done for me, but for Who You are You are the reason I sing, You are the melody in my heart The song that I sing, I will praise You Lord.”
We need to remember to also praise God not just for all the good things He has done or given to us, but most importantly, for who He is. God is good; as in there is no evil, no negativity, no badness in Him. He is pure, holy, and righteous. The bible says in 1 John 1:5 (Amplified version) that
“…God is Light [He is holy, His message is truthful, He is perfect in righteousness], and in Him there is no darkness at all [no sin, no wickedness, no imperfection].”
So I implore you to praise God with me by letting Him know who He is to you. You can praise Him by saying sweet things to Him like:
Lord, You are my: | Lord, You are: | Lord, |
---|---|---|
Deliverer | King of kings | I praise You |
Healer | Mighty | I worship You |
Refuge | Strong | I exalt You |
Stronghold | Lord of Lords | I adore You |
Hiding Place | Ancient of Days | I lift your name high |
Rock | Miracle working God | I reverence You |
Provider | Prince of Peace | I love You |
Protector | Righteous Judge | I magnify You |
Joy | True and Faithful One | I seek You |
Strength | Way maker | I bless You |
Salvation | Holy | I hope in You |
Vindicator | Faithful | I glorify You |
Defense | Merciful | I boast in You |
Strong Tower | Loving | I desire You |
Peace | Good | I want more of You |
Fortress | Light of the world | I trust You |
Shepard | Name above all names | I thirst for You |
Life | Bread of Life | I honor You |
So take time out throughout your day to love on God by giving Him praise and thanksgiving; make it a daily practice. Let it become a habit of yours. Take a praise break right now and begin praising God for everything!
Let me remind you again what David charged us to do as stated in Psalm 103:22 NLT:
“Praise the Lord, everything He has created, Everything in all His kingdom. “ “Let all that I am praise the Lord.”
I pray that as you take time to praise the Lord for not only what He has done in your life, but also for who He is, may His joy radiate in you and through you and may you begin to walk in victory over any negative situation in your life. His joy is your strength! Amen!
Until next time, remember, keep your hope in God for He loves you and has promised to never leave you nor forsake you!
Now, if this post has blessed you, please share it on social media with your family and friends so they can be blessed as well, and also leave a comment below!
Whenever I start to feel down it maybe question God, I will just go to the list above to remind myself why we are thankful to the almighty every second of every minute of every day.
